Your Car Battery Has Died in Manchester — What To Do Next

1. Make yourself safe first

If the car stopped in a live lane, switch on your hazard lights immediately, and if it is safe to do so, get everyone out on the pavement side and stand well away from traffic. On a motorway or the Mancunian Way, go behind the barrier and call 999 before anything else.

If you are parked up safely — a driveway, car park or quiet side street — you have time. Take a breath and work through the checks below.

2. Confirm it really is the battery

A flat battery has a very recognisable set of symptoms. Turn the key and listen carefully.

• Rapid clicking and no engine turn: almost always a flat or failing battery.
• Dashboard lights dim or die completely when you turn the key: battery.
• Engine turns over strongly but never fires: more likely fuel, immobiliser or a sensor, not the battery.
• Nothing at all, no lights, no click: flat battery, a loose terminal, or a blown main fuse.

3. Check the obvious things

Open the bonnet and look at the battery terminals. If you can see white or blue-green powder, or you can wiggle a terminal clamp by hand, that alone can stop a car starting. A loose clamp tightened with a spanner sometimes solves the whole problem.

Also check whether an interior light, boot light or headlight was left on overnight. That tells you the battery is probably fine and just discharged, which means a jump start will get you going.

4. Decide: jump start or replacement

If the battery went flat because of something you did — lights left on, a door not shut, a short journey after a long cold spell — a jump start plus a decent drive will usually recover it.

If the car has been getting slower to start for weeks, or the battery is more than five years old, a jump start is a rescue, not a repair. Expect to replace it soon.
