Top 6 Reasons Your Car Won't Start (And How to Tell Them Apart)
Most people assume a car that will not start has a flat battery. Often it does — but not always. The noise your car makes when you turn the key narrows it down quickly.
1. Flat or failing battery
The classic: rapid clicking, dim dash lights, or total silence. Batteries typically last three to five years in UK conditions, and cold weather exposes a weak one instantly. A jump start confirms the diagnosis — if the car runs happily afterwards, the battery or the charging system is your culprit.
2. Corroded or loose battery terminals
A perfectly healthy battery cannot deliver current through a furred-up terminal. Look for crusty deposits around the clamps. Cleaning and tightening the connections is a five-minute job and costs nothing, and it is the first thing we check on any callout.
3. A failing alternator
If your battery keeps going flat despite being new, the alternator may not be recharging it while you drive. Warning signs include a battery light on the dash, headlights that dim at idle, and a car that starts fine on a jump but dies again within a day or two.
4. Starter motor problems
One loud clunk followed by nothing, with bright dashboard lights, points at the starter rather than the battery. Sometimes the solenoid sticks. A starter fault will not be cured by a jump start, so it is worth identifying before you pay for anything else.
5. Fuel and immobiliser issues
If the engine spins over at normal speed but refuses to catch, you have electrical power — so look elsewhere. Empty tank, wrong fuel, a failed fuel pump or an immobiliser that does not recognise the key are the usual suspects. A key with a dying battery in it can stop a modern car dead; try the spare.
6. Cold weather and short journeys
Cold thickens engine oil and reduces a battery's available power at the same moment the engine needs more of it. Add a routine of five-minute trips that never fully recharge the battery, and a January morning will find the weak point. This is the single most common cause we see between November and February.
